"One day it occurred to me that it had been many years since the world had been afforded the spectacle of a man adventurous enough to undertake a journey through Germany on foot. After much thought, I decided that I was a person fitted to furnish to mankind this spectacle. So I determined to do it. This was in March, 1878." Mark Twain, A Tramp Abroad

A Day in the Life of...

I have had many people ask me how I spend my days here in Marburg while the father is in class. Sometimes the question goes, "So what exactly do you do all day?"--as if to imply that Penelope and I sit in the dorm room staring at each, just waiting for the father to arrive. Other times it is posed assuming that we are constantly going on amazing German adventures day in and day out. To settle the question once and for all, I have taken the time to jot down the activities of one of our typical days so you can judge for yourself. (P.S. This is not a schedule. I don't believe in scheduling my child's daily life. Every day is different--some more exciting than others...)

1:30 Get up to feed Penelope
5:30 Get up to feed Penelope
8:30 Wake up, change, feed and play with Penelope
9:00 Have breakfast (coffee and Müesli) and get dressed while Penelope plays on the bed
9:45 Put Penelope in stroller, drag laundry stuff down the hall and start a load
10:00 Put Penelope down for a nap, finish getting ready
10:45 Quickly go down to put the clothes in the dryer while Penelope is still sleeping

12:30 Meet the father at ‘German school’, get a sandwich from the bakery and eat together at the park
13:45 Say goodbye to father, walk to the grocery store and bakery to buy items for dinner while Penelope naps in her stroller
14:30 Walk to the Law School to use the internet
14:35 Stop at a bench to feed and change Penelope
15:00 Arrive at the Law School, check email, do a blog entry while entertaining Penelope

17:30 Feed and change Penelope
18:00 Wash dishes, cook dinner
19:00 Eat dinner together

20:15 Wash dishes while the father bathes Penelope, finish getting Penelope ready for bed
20:45 Put Penelope to sleep
21:00 Take a shower, read in bed
22:00 Good night!

And since the father was feeling left out and wanted to prove to everyone that he is indeed busy studying German here, he submitted his daily schedule:

7:40 Wake up, get dressed, make French press coffee and eat yoghurt with Müesli
8:21 Catch bus to town, study German on the way
8:45 Arrive at ‘German school’, use internet while waiting for class to start
9:00 Learn German!
10:30 Break time, meet the mother at ‘German school’, go to nearby bakery for a hot pretzel and play with Penelope
11:00 Learn more German!
12:30 Lunch time, stop by Theology School to see if anyone will talk to me, buy a Döner and eat it in the park
14:00 Learn even more German!
16:00 Bus ride home
16:21 Arrive home, play with Penelope, do German homework, relax
